Central Florida Expressway Tolls

SmartSensor HD’s true high definition radar provides the Central Florida Expressway with the accurate data needed to ensure that tolls are accurately charged and collected.

Project Team

Central Florida Expressway (project owner); Metric Engineering (design consultants); Transcore (tolling system); Kapsch (maintenance contractor0; and AECOM (validation testing).

Project Scope

Implement an accurate and reliable vehicle detection technology capable of providing vehicle classification data that can be compared annually with collected tolls; and also of performing basic daily vehicle detection of per vehicle speeds, 85th percentile speeds, volumes, occupancies, classes, etc.

Problems and Challenges

The Central Florida Expressway charges tolls based on vehicle classification, but had no way of validating those tolls. The system required a detection device that would provide accurate, reliable daily traffic information as well as the vehicle classification data sets needed to validate toll revenues on an annual basis.

Solution

SmartSensor HD was installed in 2012, after extensive testing by Transcore and Metric Engineering. Testing occurred over a 12-month period at multiple sites and roadway configurations, and HD was found to consistently provide accurate, lane-by-lane classification data, in addition to accurate daily counts, speeds and occupancy data. HD is used to create four length-based classifications that are compared directly to the tolling (axle) classifications to determine whether the correct tolls are being collected.

SmartSensor HD provides the Central Florida Expressway with accurate daily traffic information, but more importantly, it provides overall validation of the tolling system.

Benefits

SmartSensor HD provides the Central Florida Expressway with accurate daily traffic information, but more importantly, it provides overall validation of the tolling system. Since 2012, Central Florida Expressway has been able to accurately validate that the system is collecting the correct tolls based on classifications.
