Integrated Traveler Assistance System

SmartSensor HD’s data helps keep visitors at Rhode Island’s T.F. Green State Airport better informed about current traffic conditions.

Project Team

The Rhode Island Transportation Management Center (RITMC); T.F. Green State Airport, Providence.

Project Scope

The Integrated Traveler Assistance System is an interactive wall kiosk located inside the T.F. Green State Airport. It uses data from SmartSensor HD to provide visitors to Rhode Island with roadway travel times and speed maps, as well as mass transit schedules and other valuable information.

Problems and Challenges

Rhode Island transportation officials wanted to improve traveler information for visitors landing at Green Airport near Providence. Centrally located directly off Interstate 95, Green Airport serves southeastern New England, including Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts. In the past, visitors have expressed frustration with the lack of information about travel routes, current conditions and congestion, and employees at rental car companies have been unable to provide real-time information when customers request it.

Solution

The RITMC has installed a wall kiosk at Green Airport that combines CCTV monitors with real-time traveler information to create visual displays that let travelers know about current traffic conditions. The Integrated Traveler Assistance System includes trip times and travel maps, which are created with data provided by SmartSensor HD units deployed throughout the area. Travelers can use the information to plan the best route to their final destination; they can also print out directions, maps and other information directly from the kiosk. The Integrated Traveler Assistance System also includes area train and bus schedules.

As a result of the Integrated Traveler Assistance system and other innovations, T.F. Green State Airport was named the fourth best airport in the US and ranked first for ease of access in 2013.

Benefits

Thanks to the Integrated Traveler Assistance kiosk, visitors to Providence can quickly and easily determine the best route to take from the airport. RITMC’s innovative use of SmartSensor HD’s data in calculating trip times and creating speed maps, coupled with CCTV displays, mass transit schedules, and other traveler information makes driving from T.F. Green State Airport more efficient; it also helps alleviate congestion by rerouting potential traffic away from congested roadways. As a result of the Integrated Traveler Assistance system and other innovations, T.F. Green State Airport was named the fourth best airport in the US and ranked first for ease of access in 2013, according to Travel + Leisure magazine.
